Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The city is expected to witness significant traffic congestion today due to multiple religious processions, a protest meeting, and a football match. The Kolkata Police issued a detailed advisory outlining the routes that will likely be affected, urging commuters to avoid certain zones and plan alternative routes to prevent delays.
The day will begin with a major religious procession scheduled to start at 8:00 AM, moving through Howrah Bridge, Strand Road, Raja Katra, M.D. Road, Hari Ram Goneka Street, and Kalakar Street. Early morning commuters, especially office-goers and students, are advised to steer clear of these areas.
By afternoon, traffic is expected to worsen as two more religious processions are scheduled at 4:00 PM. One will pass through Nimtala Ghat Street, M.D. Road, Jorabagan Street, Kalakar Street, and other adjoining areas. Another will cover G.R. Road, Nimak Mahal Road, CGR Road, and Dumayune Avenue. These routes are likely to experience heavy congestion, with possible diversions.
Adding to the traffic woes, a protest meeting at College Street is also expected at 4:00 PM. College Street and surrounding roads may face complete standstill for a brief period. A separate procession will hit Rashbehari Avenue at 4:30 PM, likely affecting southern parts of the city.
Later in the evening, two more processions will commence at 5:00 PM, one moving along D.H. Road to Behala Tram Depot, and the other covering a long stretch from College Street to Hari Ghosh Street, passing through Bidhan Sarani, Hedua, and other key points. These rallies may bring north and south traffic to a crawl.
Finally, a high-traffic football match at EM Bypass at 7:30 PM will put pressure on the already stretched city roads. Spectators and regular commuters on the bypass can expect major delays. Authorities may impose short-term diversions depending on crowd intensity.
The Kolkata Police have urged all commuters to remain updated via official traffic handles and follow live alerts. Emergency services have been kept on standby, and further advisories will be issued as situations develop.
